Kotare Designs is run by James Markham—a Wellington-based structural engineer with over 18 years of experience. When you work with Kotare Designs, you work directly with James. No account managers, no handovers—just reliable, one-on-one service from start to finish.

Experience that spans three countries and 20 years

James has worked across three countries in structural, civil, and water engineering, as well as construction and project management. For the last 14 years, he’s focused on residential and small commercial structural design throughout Wellington, Kāpiti, Palmerston North, and the Wairarapa. He brings a practical mindset and a deep understanding of different building styles, materials, and site challenges.

Focused on residential & light commercial design

James specialises in structural engineering for renovations, extensions, new builds, and small commercial alterations. He works closely with homeowners, builders, and architects to create efficient, consent-ready designs.

Outside the office

When James isn’t engineering homes, you’ll find him spending time with his young family, snowboarding in winter, scuba diving somewhere tropical, or enjoying a craft beer after a weekend football match.
